Arts and Crafts House

Arts and Crafts House

A large Arts and Crafts period home in Hampstead Garden Suburb, re-imagined by Robert Hirschfield Architects to allow for more generous spaces to intelligently connect all the way through.
The open-plan kitchen / dining on the lower ground features a double-height space extending up towards the ground floor, with glazed partitions connecting to the adjacent snug and to the study above, while the living room opens onto the space below via folding timber shutters.
Match developed the lighting concept in close collaboration with the Architect and Client to beautifully complement this vision, whilst making sure that both the aesthetic and functional requirements were met.
The challenge of lighting the double-height dining space was overcome by combining three large suspended luminaires for general diffused lighting with directional and beam adjustable spotlights to provide accent and task lighting to the artworks and table. Fixed miniature uplights and wall lights complete the lighting for this space, to enhance the architectural features whilst providing a further layer of soft / night light.
Trimless downlights with warm dimming light sources have been adopted throughout the house, complemented by slim linear lights with fully opal diffusers carefully integrated in joinery and shelving, to provide discrete, glare-free lighting. The choice of excellent colour rendering LEDs throughout was key to ensure the warm finishes stand out in their natural beauty.
The end result is a beautiful, warm and welcoming environment fostering comfort and well-being.

Fenchurch Street Station

Fenchurch Street Station is a central London railway terminus operated by c2c. The station opened in 1841 where up until today it still retains its original heritage facade having been Grade II Listed. The interior has since been modified but has gradually become dated, tired and in need of upgrade.
Match alongside the Architect and design team set out to provide visitors and commuters with a refreshed, exciting yet considered scheme giving the station a much needed uplift to complement the new retail offerings. The facade will also see a new lighting scheme fit to celebrate its history and significance to the local area.

Broadgate Link

Broadgate link is a key pedestrian area home to a variety of retail offerings linking Liverpool Street station to the nearby Broadgate offices development. Due to the erection of a nearby development, the opportunity arised for upgrading this key retail area to align with the new scheme.

The key objectives were to enhance the environment and customer experience whilst encouraging people to use this route which was not inviting and cut off from natural daylight. In response to the challenge the design team and Match came up with a light driven scheme which introduces the sense of an outdoors space indoors while offering that much needed visual interest and enhanced experience transforming the whole area both day and night.

Donauplex Facade

Donauplex is an extension to Donau Zentrum which is currently the largest shopping centre in Vienna. The area is home to the cinema complex and also the food & beverage’s hall regularly visited by shoppers and the local community. Match worked closely with the client and design team to upgrade and modernise this space to encourage greater footfall.
The concept was to create a green, dynamic and outdoor/indoor environment where people could meet, work and spend time. There was a desire to maximise the feeling of a well day lit space during day-time despite having large covered ceilings throughout. To overcome this design challenge, large bespoke colour tune-able light panels were designed to mimic the cool feeling of daylight but would slowly become warmer towards night-time. The lighting design was carefully planned so all plants were well lit to grow whilst fitting choices were made to fully compliment the interior design, materials & finishes.

Park Lane Penthouse

A complete rebuild and extension of an existing mid-19th Century terraced house located in the Westbourne Conservation Area.
The project included the excavation of the entire plot to create a large basement for a growing family and contemporary glass extensions and insertions at the rear of the house.
The interior design features a contemporary character, with a monolithic steel staircase standing out as outstanding architectural feature linking the house vertically and providing a striking sculptural element connecting the six floors.
Match Lighting Studio delivered a lighting scheme to well complement the architecture throughout, with linear lighting details well concealed in the fabric of the rooms and carefully selected decorative luminaires softening the strong geometric lines of the spaces at times.

SCS Shopping City Süd

The Shopping City Süd is located south of Vienna and is currently the biggest shopping mall in Austria.
As part of the centre’s recent upgrade and refurbishment works a new ceiling concept was developed alongside the Architect to generate a greater sense of appeal, visual interest and brightness. Lighting became integral to the design as carefully selected linear lights fully diffused became glowing elements within the ceiling replacing intermittently the timber baffles making up the new waved feature ceiling. The result saw a seamlessly integrated and elegant ceiling and lighting scheme.
A key intersection between the main mall and IKEA was given special emphasis by introducing a cluster of beautifully crafted pendants celebrating this key connection and large double volume space. Lighting was discreetly integrated into the ceiling concept to help deliver the right amount of light to highlight all the new green and planting zones introduced as part of the new scheme.

Arkadia

Arkadia is the largest shopping mall in Poland, visited annually by nearly 20 million customers. The new exterior landscape is part of a wider regeneration programme of the whole centre that will be renewed and extended. As part of the project upgrade Match worked alongside the Architect to provide the lighting design for the whole exterior masterplan and the initial phase was to provide a special yet unique lighting scheme to the new playground area to reflect the fun and playful nature of the space.
We wanted to create a well lit and uniform scheme, safe yet inspiring for children to spend time and play. The final solution sees a catenary lighting system complimentary to the use and function of the space attracting visitors and turning the playground into a special place come night-time.

Full refurbishment of a student accommodation in Barbican that involved the complete remodelling of all 248 existing student bedrooms and all common and exterior spaces.
The new work delivered a modern “city living” feel with high quality materials, lighting and bespoke FF&E, all working within the existing room sizes, with value added through creating new studios and “twodios” in previously oversized cluster flats.
The key challenge faced by the design and construction team was meeting the strict completion deadline, with the works successfully completed in only 20 weeks.
Match were appointed as lighting consultants to work in close collaboration with the Design Team and Contractor to design and deliver the lighting for the reception, break out and exterior common areas, as well as for the various different types of bedrooms and studios, rolled out by contractor Thomas Sinden throughout the whole project.

Hampstead Heath House

A substantial house refurbishment in north London that included a contemporary basement extension. Below an extract of the testimonial from the Client.

“…our light designer is an absolute joy to work with and has an amazing eye for detail around the subject of light.
He has held the hand of our electrician and contractors and worked well with our other designers while they needed to install lighting details which were complicated for a residential home within the existing structure. He was always available and really took a personal and heartfelt approach to his work.
We are extremely happy in our house and this is to a large degree due to Match excellent work. The lighting details they have installed throughout the house and garden are beautiful and add a warmth to the place. Furthermore, the mood of the house changes beautifully between day and night with the lighting design.”

Hillview Apartments

Hillview Apartments

Conversion of a large Victorian terraced house into three substantial apartments.

Unlike most conversions the ground and first floors have been divided vertically through the length of the building, to provide two individual duplex dwelling units with separate entrances and private rear gardens, and in this way retaining the essence and uniqueness of the Victorian terraced house.
The upper unit is akin to a rambling loft apartment washed with daylight and enjoying wonderful views across the city.
The open plan living spaces, extending from front to back into the patio areas of the rear gardens, presented a challenge for the lighting design, as the rooms under the glazed conservatory structures at the back are flooded with natural light, while the rooms at the front are lacking it.
Match therefore carefully planned the lighting scheme to effortlessly compensate such contrast thanks to contemporary lighting details discretely integrated in walls, ceiling and furniture.
The end result is well-balanced lighting layered throughout the spaces, discreet and elegant, yet functional and essential.

Chelsea House

A significant but sensitive refurbishment and extension to this beautiful listed terrace house in the heart of Chelsea.
The lighting was conceived so as to complement the variety of finishes and furniture across the different levels: a contemporary feel on the open plan basement extension, elegant and classic on the formal rooms from ground to second floor and essential and functional at the top level.
The open plan dining / kitchen / snug at basement level required a flexible lighting scheme to suit the various tasks and use of the spaces as well as carefully considered lighting details to compensate the lack of natural light. The adoption of an intelligent Lutron lighting control system with multiple scenes allowed easy control of the various lighting layers.
In the formal rooms of the upper levels decorative lighting takes over, to frame and complement the wonderful furniture and finishes.
Warm dimming luminaires throughout allow matching the traditional behaviour of halogen and incandescent lamps with highly efficiency light sources.
